Token F-360A-4A MI
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This Civil War token is cataloged as Fuld 360A-4A from Michigan. The fourth die combination for the Michigan 360A obverse indicates sustained production from this particular die. Michigan's Civil War token production, while more modest than Ohio's, encompassed enough variety to create a substantial collecting field. The 360-series in Michigan documents specific merchants whose tokens circulated in Detroit and other commercial centers across the state. The token tradition in America encompasses an extraordinary range of purposes, from merchant advertising and transportation fare to gaming, amusement, loyalty programs, and commemorative distribution. Token rarity assessments must account for the often-limited geographic distribution of original issues, as pieces that circulated in a single community may have survived in very small numbers despite initially adequate production quantities. The copper composition provided the standard base-metal striking for tokens intended for general circulation as cent substitutes during the 1862-1864 coin shortage.
