Description
This undated brass token, cataloged as Rualu-NJ-Brg-5, was issued by the Ferracute Machine Company of Bridgeton, New Jersey. Ferracute was a leading manufacturer of coining presses, stamping machinery, and metalworking equipment during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, making them a supplier to the United States Mint itself. The company produced this token as a sample of their press capabilities, demonstrating the quality of their equipment to potential customers. Ferracute tokens are particularly interesting to numismatists because they were made by the same firm that built the machines used to strike federal coinage. The Rualu catalog documents New Jersey tokens, and the "Brg" code designates Bridgeton as the city of origin. Ferracute Machine Company remained in operation well into the twentieth century.
