Description
William H. Richardson was a dealer in umbrellas, parasols, and sunshades at 229 Broadway (upstairs) in New York City. Richardson also had a presence at 104 Market Street in Philadelphia, operating across the two largest American cities. His brass and white metal token (Miller NY-657) advertised his specialty trade. The umbrella and parasol business was a significant retail sector in mid-century America, as these accessories were essential items for both men and women. The "upstairs" location on Broadway indicates a second-floor showroom, common for specialty retailers who did not require street-level foot traffic. This white metal piece is somewhat scarcer than copper or brass versions. Struck in white metal (a tin-lead alloy), this piece has a silvery appearance but is softer than copper or brass. White metal tokens survive in smaller numbers, as the alloy's softness made them more susceptible to bending and surface damage. Cataloged as Miller NY-657.
Rarity Notes
White metal and silvered strikings are less common than copper or brass versions and tend to show more wear due to softer alloy composition.
