Description

This undated Civil War era store card, cataloged as Fuld NC-A-4b1, is a brass patriotic edition token issued by Chamerlain Bros. of Tennessee. The "NC" prefix in the Fuld catalog designates tokens from the "Not Cataloged" or supplementary sections that were discovered or reclassified after the main catalog was established. Chamerlain Bros. was a Tennessee merchant partnership that issued tokens during the Civil War coin shortage. Tennessee merchants faced unique challenges as a divided state where Union and Confederate forces both operated, making normal commerce extremely difficult. Token die sinkers developed specialized skills in miniature design and metalworking that paralleled the capabilities of government mint engravers, though working with smaller budgets and less sophisticated equipment. The brass composition and patriotic die suggest this token was produced for use in Union-held areas of Tennessee, as Confederate-aligned merchants had limited access to Northern die-sinkers.
