Description

This undated Civil War era token, cataloged as Fuld 905C-1i, is a zinc reverse edition piece associated with the Sanitary Fair of Ohio. The Sanitary Fairs were massive fundraising events organized by the United States Sanitary Commission during the Civil War to raise money for medical supplies, hospital equipment, and care for wounded soldiers. These fairs were held in major cities across the North and represented some of the largest organized charitable events in American history to that date. The Ohio Sanitary Fair token in zinc serves as both a commemorative of these important wartime events and a collectible souvenir. The zinc composition designated by the "i" suffix is less common than copper or brass and makes this piece somewhat fragile, as zinc corrodes more readily than other token metals.
