Description

This undated Civil War era store card, cataloged as Fuld 600B-9b, is a brass patriotic edition token issued by Elliot, Vinson & Co. of Tennessee. During the Civil War, the hoarding of federal coinage created a severe shortage of small change throughout the country, prompting merchants and private manufacturers to produce tokens that circulated as emergency currency. Tennessee merchants faced particular challenges as a border state with divided loyalties and disrupted commerce. Elliot, Vinson & Co. used these tokens both as practical substitutes for scarce federal cents and as advertising for their business. The brass composition was among the most common for Civil War tokens, being inexpensive to produce while durable enough for extended circulation. The Fuld cataloging system assigns Tennessee tokens to the 600-series die numbers, with the suffix letter indicating composition — "b" for brass in this case.
