Description

This undated brass Civil War store card cataloged as Fuld 160A-2b features a reverse die (RE) issued by John Bohm of Ohio. Ohio was a critical Union state during the Civil War, providing the third-largest number of troops to the Union army and producing several of the war's most prominent generals, including Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and Philip Sheridan. John Bohm's store card circulated in his Ohio community as a substitute for the federal coinage that had been hoarded out of circulation. The Fuld catalog documents Ohio as one of the most prolific states for Civil War token production, with merchants across the state issuing tokens to facilitate commerce during the monetary emergency. Each merchant's token serves as a miniature advertisement preserved in brass for over a century and a half.
