Description
This undated copper Civil War store card cataloged as Fuld 100B-7a features a reverse die (RE) from Snow Hill, West Virginia. This represents yet another die combination in the 100B series, illustrating the prolific variety creation that characterized Civil War token production. Die sinkers produced numerous obverse and reverse dies that were mixed and matched to create dozens of varieties from a relatively small number of individual dies. The practice of muling — combining dies not originally intended to be paired — was common and created many of the rarest Civil War token varieties. Snow Hill's appearance on multiple die combinations indicates the community or its merchants were active participants in the emergency currency system that arose when federal coins vanished from everyday commerce during 1862-1864.
