Description
This undated German silver token was issued by the Cow Boy's Saloon in Doans, Texas. Doans, officially Doans Crossing or Doan's Store, was located on the Red River in Wilbarger County, Texas, at the last supply point on the Western Trail cattle drive route before herds crossed into Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). Between 1876 and 1895, an estimated six million cattle crossed the Red River at Doans, making it one of the most important locations in the history of the American cattle industry. The Cow Boy's Saloon served the cowboys who passed through this frontier outpost. German silver — an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel containing no actual silver — was a popular composition for saloon tokens. This token is a rare artifact of the authentic American cowboy era and the cattle trail commerce that defined the post-Civil War Texas frontier.
