Coin Details
Description
This undated token bearing the Philadelphia Mint mark was included in U.S. Mint Uncirculated Coin Sets as an identifier for the Philadelphia Mint coins. The Philadelphia Mint, established in 1792 as the first facility of the United States Mint, has been the nation's primary coinage facility for over two centuries. Including mint-marked tokens in uncirculated sets helped collectors organize and identify their coins, particularly important when Philadelphia coins lacked a mint mark on the coins themselves (the "P" mint mark was not added to most denominations until 1980). These tokens document the U.S. Mint's packaging and presentation practices for its collector products. While individually common, they are essential components of complete uncirculated set collections and represent the administrative side of the U.S. Mint's collector programs.
