Description

This undated medal of William McKinley is a standard U.S. Mint bronze presidential medal honoring the twenty-fifth President (1897-1901). McKinley's presidency bridged the Gilded Age and the Progressive Era, and his administration oversaw America's emergence as a global power through the Spanish-American War of 1898. The war's outcome brought the United States control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and temporary authority over Cuba, transforming the nation from a continental republic into an overseas empire. McKinley (1843-1901) was an Ohio congressman and governor who championed protective tariffs as the foundation of American industrial prosperity. His 1896 campaign against William Jennings Bryan, managed by the brilliant Mark Hanna, pioneered modern political fundraising and messaging. His first term also saw the annexation of Hawaii, the Gold Standard Act of 1900, and the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion in China through the Open Door Policy. McKinley was assassinated on September 6, 1901, at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. He died eight days later, becoming the third president killed by an assassin. His death brought Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency and inaugurated the Progressive Era. McKinley's numismatic legacy includes the 1903 Louisiana Purchase Exposition gold dollar bearing his portrait, one of the first American commemorative gold coins. The undated bronze medal preserves McKinley's pleasant, round-faced features for the Mint's ongoing collector program.
