Description
This undated medal depicts the White House, the official residence and workplace of every President of the United States since John Adams moved into the still-unfinished building on November 1, 1800. Designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, who won a public design competition judged by George Washington himself, the White House was constructed between 1792 and 1800 using Aquia Creek sandstone that was later painted white. British troops burned the building in August 1814 during the War of 1812, and it was rebuilt and expanded numerous times thereafter while maintaining its iconic neoclassical facade. This U.S. Mint medal honors both the physical structure and the institution of the presidency it represents. White House medals serve as popular keepsakes for visitors to Washington, D.C., and as collectibles for those interested in presidential and architectural history. The undated format ensures the medal remains timeless regardless of the current administration.
