Coin Details
Description
This undated uniface brass medal bears the design of the Pacific Coast Numismatic Society (PCNS), struck on only one side with the reverse left blank. Uniface medals have a long tradition in numismatics, serving purposes ranging from die trials and test strikings to intentional single-sided commemorative or award pieces. For a numismatic society, a uniface medal may function as a membership award, meeting prize, or exhibit recognition piece, with the blank reverse sometimes used for individual engraving of the recipient's name or achievement. The brass composition gives this piece a warm golden tone that distinguishes it from the bronze version. PCNS, founded in 1915 in San Francisco by Farran Zerbe during the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, has issued medals throughout its history to mark conventions, anniversaries, and achievements within the society. Uniface medals from regional numismatic clubs are often produced in very small quantities, struck as needed for specific recognition events rather than in large commemorative batches, making them scarcer than dated convention or anniversary medals from the same organization.
Rarity Notes
Uniface brass, undated. A PCNS award or recognition piece produced in small quantities. Uniface medals from regional clubs are uncommon in the marketplace.
