No Date Medal John Tyler Copper 25mm Accidental President
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This undated copper medal at 25mm features John Tyler with the inscription "Accidental President," a reference to Tyler's succession to the presidency in 1841 following the death of William Henry Harrison just 31 days after inauguration. Tyler established the crucial precedent that a vice president succeeding a deceased president becomes the president in full, not merely an acting president. The "Accidental President" label, while historically accurate, was also used derisively by Tyler's political opponents. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. This small medal captures both Tyler's historical significance and the controversy that surrounded his presidency.
