Description
This undated medal of George H.W. Bush, subtitled "First Steam Coinage," is a U.S. Mint presidential medal honoring the forty-first President (1989-1993). The "First Steam Coinage" designation refers to the medal's reverse design, which commemorates the introduction of steam-powered coining presses at the Philadelphia Mint in 1836 â a technological revolution that dramatically increased production capacity and coin uniformity. This reverse design was shared across certain Mint medal issues as part of the historical series celebrating milestones in Mint history. George Herbert Walker Bush (1924-2018) brought one of the most extensive resumes in presidential history to the office â combat Navy pilot in World War II, congressman, Ambassador to the United Nations, envoy to China, Director of Central Intelligence, and two-term Vice President under Ronald Reagan. His presidency was defined by foreign policy achievements: the peaceful end of the Cold War, the reunification of Germany, the successful prosecution of the Gulf War to liberate Kuwait from Iraqi invasion, and the negotiation of NAFTA. Domestically, Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, both landmark pieces of legislation. His decision to break his "read my lips, no new taxes" pledge in pursuit of deficit reduction contributed to his defeat by Bill Clinton in 1992 but is now viewed by many historians as fiscally responsible. The undated bronze medal combines Bush's presidential portrait with the Mint's First Steam Coinage historical reverse.
