Description

This undated medal of Dwight D. Eisenhower is a standard U.S. Mint bronze presidential medal honoring the thirty-fourth President (1953-1961). Eisenhower brought to the presidency an unmatched military resume — he had served as Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War II, planning and executing the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, and accepting Germany's unconditional surrender in May 1945. His transition from five-star general to president was the most prominent military-to-civilian leadership transfer since Ulysses S. Grant. Eisenhower's presidency was characterized by a calm, confident leadership style that belied significant accomplishments. He ended the Korean War, launched the Interstate Highway System that transformed American transportation and commerce, sent federal troops to Little Rock to enforce school desegregation, established NASA, signed the first civil rights legislation since Reconstruction, and managed Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union through a combination of nuclear deterrence and diplomatic engagement. His farewell address warning against the "military-industrial complex" became one of the most prescient and frequently quoted presidential speeches. Dwight David Eisenhower (1890-1969) was raised in Abilene, Kansas, graduated from West Point, and rose through the Army's ranks with a reputation for organizational brilliance and an ability to manage difficult personalities including Montgomery, Patton, and de Gaulle. The undated bronze medal captures "Ike's" characteristic broad grin and genial demeanor that made him one of the most personally popular presidents.
