(No Date) German-Silver Civil War Store Card F-630K-5j, T. Brimelow NY
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
T. Brimelow of New York issued this token as emergency currency during the Civil War. New York was the nation's commercial capital, with New York City alone producing hundreds of store card varieties from Broadway retailers to waterfront wholesalers. The german-silver composition of this variety (Fuld 630K-5j) is scarce for this merchant. This undated piece entered commerce during the 1862-1864 period when millions of private tokens replaced vanished federal coinage. Each unique combination of obverse and reverse dies constitutes a separate Fuld catalog number, even when struck in the same metal. The token era ended when Congress authorized new federal small-denomination currency and criminalized private token production in 1864. The German silver alloy gives these tokens an attractive appearance that has made them popular with collectors.
Rarity Notes
German silver (a copper-nickel-zinc alloy) strikings are less common than copper or brass versions and are sought after for their distinctive silvery appearance. With 44 cataloged varieties, T. Brimelow was a substantial producer of Civil War tokens.
