(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-700I-1j, RH
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War store card from the Fuld 700I-1j series, attributed to the unidentified issuer "RH." This token belongs to the Fuld 700 "RH" series, a prolific group of unattributed Civil War store cards. Despite extensive research, the individual or firm behind the "RH" initials remains unidentified. The number of die combinations and metal variants indicates large-scale token production. German silver strikings are sought after for their distinctive bright appearance and relative scarcity compared to copper or brass versions. This undated piece was produced circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Token issuers ranged from sole proprietors to large retail establishments, with some merchants ordering thousands of pieces while others had only a few hundred struck for local distribution. Over 25 million Civil War tokens were produced before Congress ended private coinage in 1864, making this one of the most extensive series in American numismatics.
Rarity Notes
German silver (a copper-nickel-zinc alloy) strikings are less common than copper or brass versions and are sought after for their distinctive silvery appearance. With 6 cataloged varieties, RH was a minor token issuer.
