(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-700D-2e, RH
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War store card from the Fuld 700D-2e series, attributed to the unidentified issuer "RH." This token belongs to the Fuld 700 "RH" series, a prolific group of unattributed Civil War store cards. Despite extensive research, the individual or firm behind the "RH" initials remains unidentified. The number of die combinations and metal variants indicates large-scale token production. White metal strikings are scarcer than base metal versions. The soft tin alloy means these tokens were more susceptible to damage in circulation. This undated piece was produced circa 1862-1864 during the wartime coin shortage. Congress banned private token issuance in April 1864, and the introduction of fractional currency notes and new bronze two-cent pieces gradually eliminated the need for emergency tokens.
Rarity Notes
White metal (tin alloy) strikings are less common than copper or brass versions and tend to show more wear due to the softness of the alloy. With 19 cataloged varieties, RH was a notable token issuer.
