(No Date) Civil War Store Card F-630V-7G, NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War store card from New York, cataloged as Fuld 630V-7G. New York state generated the second-largest body of Civil War token issues, concentrated in New York City but extending to Albany, Troy, Buffalo, and smaller commercial centers. The gold composition of this variety (Fuld 630V-7G) is extremely rare for this merchant. Undated Civil War tokens like this one circulated alongside dated issues during the 1862-1864 period. The token trade was competitive, with die sinkers in New York, Cincinnati, and other cities vying for merchant orders across the region. The token era ended when Congress authorized new federal small-denomination currency and criminalized private token production in 1864. A gold striking of any Civil War token is a major rarity, usually produced for a die sinker's personal collection or as a gift. Over 25 million Civil War tokens were produced before Congress ended private coinage in April 1864, making them the largest private coinage movement in American history.
Rarity Notes
Gold strikings of Civil War tokens are among the rarest of all metal variants, produced in tiny quantities for presentation purposes or the collector market. With 9 cataloged varieties, this merchant was a minor token issuer.
