(No Date) Civil War Patriotic Token F-248/432a, No Compromise With Traitors
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Civil War patriotic token combining Fuld obverse die 248, a design inscribed "THE CONSTITUTION" or with constitutional references, with reverse die 432 bearing the uncompromising inscription "NO COMPROMISE WITH TRAITORS". This hardline slogan rejected any negotiated settlement with the Confederacy. This die range includes naval subjects, constitutional themes, Masonic imagery, and commercial designs. The diversity reflects the wide range of interests and loyalties expressed through the Civil War token medium, from military patriotism to fraternal and commercial concerns. The copper alloy used for this token matched the federal cent specification closely enough that these pieces passed freely in commerce during the coin shortage of 1862-1864. Although undated, this token was manufactured during the 1862-1864 period when private tokens circulated as emergency currency. Patriotic tokens circulated freely throughout the Northern states from mid-1862 through 1864. Merchants accepted them alongside genuine federal cents, and many tokens show heavy wear consistent with extended use in commerce.
