Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This undated bronze U.S. Mint medal cataloged as F&H-120 honors Charles E. Barber, who served as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1879 to 1917, the longest tenure in that position's history. Barber designed the Barber Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar series introduced in 1892, as well as numerous commemorative coins and medals. Though his designs were sometimes criticized as workmanlike compared to the artistry of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Barber was a skilled technician who produced consistently high-quality dies under demanding production conditions. The artistic quality of American medals has evolved significantly over time, from the competent but sometimes crude products of early die cutters to the sophisticated sculptural compositions of modern medalists. This official Mint medal honors his nearly four decades of service.
