Description

This undated bronze U.S. Mint medal cataloged as F&H-119 honors George T. Morgan, the acclaimed engraver who designed the Morgan Silver Dollar and served as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1917 to 1925. Morgan came to the Mint from England in 1876 at the invitation of Director Henry Linderman and created his famous dollar design that has become one of the most iconic and collected coins in American numismatics. This official U.S. Mint medal recognizing Morgan places him among the honored craftsmen whose artistic skill shaped the nation's coinage. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. The F&H-119 designation identifies this within the Fuld-Higby catalog of Mint official medals.
