Description

This undated bronze U.S. Mint medal cataloged as F&H-118 honors William and Charles Barber, the father-and-son pair who served as Chief Engravers of the United States Mint. William Barber served from 1869 to 1879, and his son Charles E. Barber succeeded him, serving from 1879 to 1917 — the longest tenure of any Chief Engraver. Together, the Barbers designed coins and medals that defined American numismatic art for half a century, including the Barber Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar series that bore Charles's name. The secondary market for American medals has become increasingly sophisticated, with specialized auction houses, dealer networks, and online platforms connecting buyers and sellers across a global collector community. This medal honoring both father and son celebrates one of the most important family dynasties in Mint history.
