Description
This Daniel Carr fantasy piece, cataloged as X-383, depicts a "1964-D" Peace Dollar β a coin that was authorized but never officially released by the United States Mint. In 1964, Congress authorized the striking of Peace Dollars to address a perceived silver shortage, and the Denver Mint produced approximately 316,000 pieces before the program was cancelled and all coins were ordered melted. Whether any 1964-D Peace Dollars survived the melt remains one of numismatics' enduring mysteries. Daniel Carr, a skilled private die maker based in Colorado, created this fantasy piece to imagine what the 1964-D Peace Dollar would have looked like had it entered circulation. Carr's fantasy issues are produced at his Moonlight Mint facility using custom dies and each production is documented with a catalog number to distinguish it from genuine U.S. Mint products.
Rarity Notes
