Description

This brass token, cataloged as TC-608971, commemorates Wendell Willkie, the Republican presidential nominee who challenged Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940 election. Willkie, a corporate lawyer and utilities executive from Indiana, was a charismatic dark-horse candidate who won the Republican nomination on the sixth ballot at the 1940 convention. Although he lost the general election by a significant margin, Willkie received more votes than any previous Republican candidate and later became an important advocate for internationalism and civil rights. His 1943 book "One World" was a bestselling argument for international cooperation. Political campaign tokens have a long American tradition dating to the early nineteenth century, and Willkie tokens are collected alongside the broader category of presidential campaign memorabilia.
