Description
This bronze medal from circa 1922 features George Washington in a peace-themed design. The early 1920s, following the carnage of World War I, saw a surge in peace-oriented commemorative productions as the world grappled with the aftermath of the conflict. Washington's image was frequently invoked in peace contexts, drawing on his Farewell Address warnings against foreign entanglements and his personal commitment to republican government over military dictatorship. Despite having led the Continental Army to victory, Washington repeatedly chose peace over war, resigning his military commission in 1783 and declining to seek a third presidential term. A Washington peace medal from the post-World War I era connects the Father of the Country's pacific legacy to the twentieth century's struggle to establish lasting international peace through organizations like the League of Nations. The bronze composition indicates this was produced for broad distribution as a commemorative or advocacy piece.
