(c.1960's) Medal FH-520 Bronze Restrike 58mm The Mexican War
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This circa 1960s bronze restrike medal cataloged as FH-520 at 58mm diameter commemorates the Mexican War (1846-1848). The original medal from which this restrike derives honored the American military achievement in the conflict that resulted in the acquisition of California, New Mexico, and the vast territories of the American Southwest. The 58mm format provides a medium-large canvas for the detailed military scenes and inscriptions of the original design. The Mexican War was the first American conflict fought primarily on foreign soil, involving major engagements at Palo Alto, Monterrey, Buena Vista, and the culminating assault on Mexico City under General Winfield Scott. The war resulted in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ceded nearly half of Mexico's territory to the United States and established the Rio Grande as the border between the two nations. Congressional medals were authorized for several commanders during the conflict. The FH-520 bronze restrike preserves the design of a historically significant medal from a war that transformed the geographic boundaries of the United States. The bronze composition and 58mm diameter make this a substantial commemorative piece that serves both collectors and students of American military history.
Rarity Notes
Medium-format Fuld-Higby bronze restrikes were produced in limited runs. FH-520 at 58mm is scarce.
