Coin Details
Description
This circa 1960s yellow bronze medal, cataloged as FH-112 (Fuld-Higby), features a portrait of Zachary Taylor, the twelfth president of the United States. Taylor, known as "Old Rough and Ready" for his distinguished military career in the Mexican-American War, served as president from 1849 until his sudden death in 1850 β the second shortest presidency in American history. The Fuld-Higby catalog documents restrikes and reproductions of historical U.S. Mint medals, and FH-112 represents a mid-twentieth century restrike of a presidential portrait medal. Yellow bronze β a copper-zinc alloy with a warm golden color β was commonly used for these restrike productions, providing an attractive appearance at moderate cost. Presidential medal restrikes from the mid-twentieth century served an educational and collecting market, making presidential portrait medals accessible to a broader audience than the scarce originals.
Rarity Notes
