(c.1960's) Medal FH-101 Yellow Bronze George Washington
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This circa 1960s yellow bronze medal cataloged as FH-101 features George Washington and is the standard-composition version of this Fuld-Higby presidential restrike. Yellow bronze — an alloy of copper, tin, and zinc with a golden appearance — was the default metal for the Fuld-Higby series, chosen for its attractive color, durability, and affordability. The alloy closely approximates the appearance of historical bronze medals while being significantly less expensive than copper or silver. FH-101 reproduces a classic Washington portrait medal, capturing the dignified bearing of the first president in the neoclassical style that dominated American medallic art from the late eighteenth through the nineteenth century. The Fuld-Higby catalog number 101 places this at the beginning of the presidential sequence, reflecting Washington's primacy in the series. The reverse carries appropriate inscriptions identifying Washington and providing historical context. George Fuld and Melvin Higby's cataloging work brought systematic organization to a previously chaotic field of medal restrikes and reproductions. Their numbering system, which groups medals by subject matter with presidential portraits receiving the 100-series designations, remains the standard reference for this category of American medallic collectibles. The yellow bronze FH-101 is among the most commonly encountered pieces in the series.
Rarity Notes
Yellow bronze is the standard Fuld-Higby composition, produced in the largest quantities. FH-101 in yellow bronze is readily available to collectors.
