This circa 1868 silver medal, cataloged as JAB-32, is the precious metal version of Bolen's Grant "Our Next President" campaign medal. Silver Grant campaign pieces by Bolen represent premium expressions of political support or commemorative anticipation, produced in very small numbers for select collectors. The silver JAB-32 would have been among the most prestigious items a collector could obtain from Bolen during the 1868 campaign season. Grant's election was widely anticipated following his Civil War heroism, and medal producers including Bolen created commemorative pieces well in advance of the actual vote. Modern commemorative medallions and fantasy pieces employ advanced minting technology including colorized designs, high-relief striking, and selective plating that would have been impossible with earlier production methods. Silver versions of political Bolen medals are extremely scarce, as the die sinker reserved his precious metal strikings for his most serious collector customers and correspondents.
