Description
This circa 1867 copper medal, cataloged as JAB-M9, is a muling combining Washington and Jefferson portrait dies — pairing the first and third presidents, both Virginia plantation owners and founding fathers who held fundamentally different visions for the young republic. Washington's Federalist sympathies contrasted with Jefferson's Democratic-Republican ideals, yet both men were indispensable to the founding of the United States. Bolen's pairing of these two founders creates a numismatic symbol of the productive tension between different political philosophies that has characterized American democracy since its inception. The M9 muling sits between M8 (Lincoln) and M10 (Washington/Lincoln) in Bolen's numbering system, illustrating his methodical approach to documenting his die combinations. The copper composition was standard for this production.
Rarity Notes
