Description
This circa 1867 copper medal, cataloged as JAB-M7, is a muling combining Lincoln and Libertas Americana dies — a variant of or companion to the JAB-M3 Lincoln / Libertas combination. The distinction between M3 and M7 may involve different die states, different Lincoln portrait dies, or subtle variations in the Libertas reverse. Bolen's multiple Lincoln / Libertas pairings reflect the intense interest in Lincoln commemoratives during the late 1860s and the natural symbolic connection between the president who ended slavery and the classical iconography of freedom. Multiple mulings with similar subjects illustrate Bolen's iterative creative process, as he explored different combinations and pairings from his growing inventory of dies. Each variant, however subtle, represents a distinct collectible within the Bolen series framework.
Rarity Notes
