Description
This circa 1867 copper medal, cataloged as JAB-M6, is a muling combining Andrew Jackson and Libertas Americana dies. Jackson's pairing with the Liberty theme creates an interesting tension, as Jackson's presidency (1829-1837) was marked by both fierce defense of popular democracy and controversial policies including the forced removal of Native Americans. Bolen's systematic pairing of each presidential portrait with the Libertas reverse created a series that invited reflection on each president's relationship to the ideals of liberty. The Jackson / Libertas muling completes the set of early presidents paired with this iconic reverse, following Washington, Jefferson, and preceding Lincoln in Bolen's systematic exploration of American leadership and liberty. The copper composition was standard for this muling series.
