Description
This circa 1867 copper medal, cataloged as JAB-M5, is a muling combining Thomas Jefferson and Libertas Americana dies. The pairing is particularly fitting, as Jefferson was directly involved in the creation of the original Libertas Americana medal — he collaborated with Benjamin Franklin in Paris to commission the design from Augustin Dupre, and the medal was struck at the Paris Mint in 1783 at Jefferson's instigation. This muling thus reunites Jefferson with his own creation in medallic form, a connection that would have been recognized by the knowledgeable numismatic collectors who were Bolen's primary audience. The copper composition and small format are characteristic of Bolen's muling series, which systematically paired his presidential portrait dies with his Libertas reverse to create a comprehensive set.
