Description
This circa 1867 copper medal, cataloged as JAB-M4, is a muling combining Washington and Libertas Americana dies. The pairing of George Washington with the Libertas design creates a historically rich combination, as the original Libertas Americana medal was struck during Washington's lifetime and celebrated the independence he helped secure as Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. Bolen's muling of these two complementary subjects creates a miniature monument to American liberty and its most famous champion. The copper composition connects this piece to the original Libertas Americana medals struck in copper by the Paris Mint. Among the series of presidential portrait / Libertas mulings, the Washington version has particular significance due to Washington's direct historical connection to the events the Libertas medal commemorated.
