Description
This circa 1867 copper medal, cataloged as JAB-M3, is a muling combining Abraham Lincoln and Libertas Americana dies. The pairing connects Lincoln to the classical tradition of Liberty that was central to American numismatic art, implicitly linking the president who freed the slaves to the broader iconography of freedom that originated with the French-designed Libertas Americana medal of 1783. This muling creates a powerful symbolic statement: Lincoln as the modern embodiment of the liberty first celebrated in medallic form during the American Revolution. The "M" prefix designates this as a muling from Bolen's die inventory, and the copper composition was standard for these experimental combinations. Lincoln paired with Liberty imagery was one of the most resonant subjects available to post-Civil War medal makers.
