Description
This circa 1867 copper medal, cataloged as JAB-M10, is a muling combining Washington and Lincoln portrait dies β two of the most revered presidents in American history paired on a single medalet. The muling format allowed Bolen (or later users of his dies) to create symbolic pairings that carried meaning beyond the individual portraits. Washington as the father of the nation and Lincoln as its savior formed a natural pair in post-Civil War American iconography, representing the founding and preservation of the republic. The "M" prefix in the catalog number designates this as an intentional muling from Bolen's die inventory. Copper was the standard composition for widely distributed mulings, and the Washington/Lincoln pairing is among the most popular subjects in the muling subcategory of the Bolen series.
