Description
This circa 1867 silver medal, cataloged as JAB-29, is the precious metal version of Bolen's Daniel Webster portrait. Webster's image rendered in silver by one of Springfield's finest die sinkers creates a fitting tribute to the Massachusetts senator and orator. Silver versions of the Webster medal were produced in very limited quantities, as was standard for Bolen's precious metal strikings. Webster's reputation as the foremost defender of the Union in the pre-Civil War era gave his image particular resonance in the post-war period when Bolen was producing these medals, as the conflict had vindicated Webster's unionist position. The artistic ambition of exposition medals reflects the exhibition culture of their eras, with fair organizers commissioning pieces that served simultaneously as souvenirs, awards, and advertisements for the expositions themselves. The thin planchet silver version represents the standard precious metal offering for this design, produced in quantities of fewer than fifteen examples.
