Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This silvered brass campaign token for George B. McClellan from circa 1864 is cataloged as DeWitt GMcC 1864-18, the silvered brass variant of the type also seen in plain brass (PCGS #913612). The silvered finish indicates a premium production for more affluent McClellan supporters. McClellan's campaign attracted significant financial support from Northern merchants and manufacturers who feared that Lincoln's policies were extending the war unnecessarily and disrupting commerce. The silver-like appearance of this token would have been appropriate for these wealthier Democratic supporters. The "c.1864" dating indicates some uncertainty about whether this piece was produced during the campaign itself or shortly after. McClellan's post-election career included a period of European travel, a term as governor of New Jersey (1878-1881), and work as a civil engineer. He died in 1885 at age 58, never having fully escaped the shadow of his Civil War controversies. Campaign tokens like this silvered brass piece preserve the memory of his presidential bid and the political opposition to Lincoln that nearly altered the course of the war.
