Description

This bronze medal from circa 1860, cataloged as Satterlee-3, is another entry in the presidential residence series, also depicting the John Adams home. The bronze composition distinguishes this from the white metal Satterlee-2 (PCGS #803549) and may indicate a different die variety or a premium version of the same basic design. The existence of multiple Satterlee catalog numbers for the same president's residence indicates that different die-sinkers produced competing versions of the residence medal, each with distinct design elements. Bronze provided a more durable and attractive medium than white metal, and bronze versions of Satterlee medals are typically scarcer due to smaller production runs. The John Adams residence at Peacefield, built in 1731 and expanded by Adams after he acquired it in 1787, served as his primary home during and after his presidency. The property has been preserved as the Adams National Historical Park and remains one of the most important presidential historic sites in the country.
