Description

This bronze medal from circa 1860, cataloged as Satterlee-237, depicts the residence of James Buchanan. Buchanan's estate, Wheatland, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania was a Federal-style mansion he purchased in 1848 and used as his home for the rest of his life, including during his presidency and retirement. Wheatland served as the headquarters for Buchanan's 1856 presidential campaign, when his "front porch" style of campaigning from his estate became a model for later candidates. The Satterlee-237 catalog number places this among the higher entries in the presidential residence series. The bronze composition was standard for the series. Buchanan is the only president from Pennsylvania and the only bachelor president, and his retirement at Wheatland was marked by his attempts to defend his reputation against charges that his passivity during the secession crisis had caused the Civil War. Wheatland has been preserved as a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public as a presidential historic site, making this medal a valuable visual record of the property.
