Description
This bronze medal from circa 1860, cataloged as Satterlee-181, depicts the residence of Zachary Taylor. Taylor's primary home was a plantation in Jefferson County, Kentucky, though he spent most of his military career moving between frontier posts. Taylor was an unusual presidential figure in that he had no permanent political base and had never voted before 1848 β his entire public career was military. The high Satterlee catalog number (181) indicates this is part of an extensive series of presidential residence medals that was cataloged in a comprehensive numerical sequence. The bronze composition was standard for the series. Taylor served only sixteen months as president before dying on July 9, 1850, from acute gastroenteritis. His residence medal is one of the more obscure entries in the presidential home series, as Taylor's domestic life was less well-documented than that of more established political dynasties like the Adams or Harrison families. The presidential residence series provides a unique lens on American history through the homes that shaped β or at least housed β the nation's leaders.
