Description
This bronze medal from circa 1860, cataloged as Satterlee-17, depicts the residence of John Quincy Adams. As the son of John Adams, the sixth president shared the family home of Peacefield in Quincy, Massachusetts, which makes the distinction between Satterlee-2/3 (John Adams) and Satterlee-17 (John Quincy Adams) significant — the medal may depict a different view of the same property or focus on a different structure associated with the younger Adams. John Quincy Adams had the most distinguished post-presidential career in American history, serving in the House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848, where he earned the nickname "Old Man Eloquent" for his tireless advocacy against slavery and particularly against the congressional "gag rule" that prevented discussion of antislavery petitions. The bronze composition was standard for the more prestigious entries in the Satterlee presidential residence series. These medals combine architectural, biographical, and political interest in a single collectible format.
