Description
This copper medal from circa 1858, cataloged as Bowers-1a, is from "Sage's Historical Tokens" series featuring Old Provoost, New York. Augustus B. Sage issued a series of historical tokens and medals in the 1850s and 1860s depicting scenes, buildings, and figures from early New York City history. The Bowers catalog reference identifies this within the standard numismatic reference by Q. David Bowers. "Old Provoost" refers to the historic Provoost House or the Provoost family, prominent in early New York Dutch colonial society. David Provoost was the first elder of the Dutch Reformed Church in New Amsterdam, and the family played a significant role in the early history of what became New York City. Sage's historical series is one of the most collected groups of American medalets, combining numismatic appeal with local historical significance. The copper composition was standard for Sage's production, though some pieces exist in other metals.
