Coin Details
Description
This brass souvenir token, cataloged as Jankovsky-840, is a facsimile of the Parker I design fifty-dollar gold slug. Produced circa 1940, this piece reproduces one of the many variations of California gold slug souvenir tokens that were popular from the early 1900s through the mid-twentieth century. The Parker reference in the token title may relate to a specific original issuer or die variety within the California territorial gold series. The Jankovsky catalog, which is the definitive reference for California gold souvenir and facsimile pieces, documents hundreds of varieties produced over more than half a century by numerous manufacturers. The 1940 production date places this token in the later period of California slug souvenir manufacturing, when these pieces were produced primarily for the established collector market rather than as tourist souvenirs.
