Description
This gilt brass souvenir token, cataloged as Jankovsky-213, reproduces the design of the famous Augustus Humbert fifty-dollar gold "slug" originally produced by the United States Assay Office of Gold in San Francisco in 1851-1852. Issued by G. G. Brinker as a San Francisco souvenir circa 1913, this token capitalizes on the romance and legend of California Gold Rush coinage. The original Humbert fifty-dollar pieces were the largest denomination regular-issue gold coins in American history, produced to convert raw gold dust into standardized currency during the chaotic early years of the Gold Rush. The Jankovsky catalog is the standard reference for California gold souvenir and facsimile pieces, documenting the extensive production of commemorative reproductions that began in the late nineteenth century and continued through the mid-twentieth century.
