(c.1893) Brass Token Rulau-NJ-Brg-6, var Ferracute-Dogs, Large Wheels
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Brass token from the Ferracute Machine Company of Bridgeton, New Jersey, circa 1893. Ferracute was America's leading manufacturer of stamping presses, coining presses, and metalworking machinery, supplying equipment to the United States Mint, foreign mints, and private manufacturers worldwide. The company produced sample tokens and medals to demonstrate its press capabilities to potential customers. The 'Dogs, Large Wheels' variety description indicates specific die imagery. Ferracute's presses were used to strike coins, tokens, medals, buttons, and other stamped metal products. Brass, 25mm. Gilded Age commerce embraced tokens as advertising tools, with merchants commissioning increasingly elaborate designs that reflected the era's emphasis on visual branding and consumer appeal. New Jersey tokens benefit from the state's position between the major commercial centers of New York and Philadelphia, with a manufacturing base that included several token-producing firms.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. Sample or demonstration token from America's premier coining press manufacturer. Ferracute tokens are collected by both exonumia specialists and historians of American industrial technology. The company's connection to the U.S. Mint adds significant numismatic relevance.
