Description

This copper token was created by Robert Lovett Jr. of New York, one of the most skilled private die sinkers in nineteenth-century America, bearing the motto "We All Have Our Hobbies" on one side and "Such Are My Subjects" on the other. Lovett produced numerous tokens, medals, and store cards for collectors and merchants throughout the 1850s to 1880s, and his work is distinguished by exceptional engraving quality that rivaled the output of the United States Mint. The self-referential mottoes on this piece speak directly to the numismatic hobby itself, acknowledging the collector's passion for acquiring and studying these small metal objects. Lovett is also famous for secretly engraving the dies for the Confederate States cent in 1861 and hiding them for years before their discovery. His tokens are among the most artistically accomplished in the American private token tradition.
