(c.1880) Zinc Token Rulau TX-Au-5, Jules Bornefeld
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Zinc variety of the Jules Bornefeld merchant token from Austin, Texas, circa 1880. This zinc striking is distinguished from the bronze version of TX-Au-5. Zinc was an unusual choice for merchant tokens of this period, as most issuers preferred copper, brass, or white metal. Bornefeld operated the Palace Saloon and Billiard Parlor at 901 Congress Avenue, serving Parole rye whiskey and Tony Faust beer. The existence of multiple metal varieties for this Austin saloon confirms Bornefeld's establishment warranted different production runs over its years of operation (1873-1897). Zinc, 21mm. Tokens from the Reconstruction period reflect the commercial optimism of a reunifying nation, as businesses resumed normal trade and commemorative issues anticipated the approaching national centennial. Texas tokens from this period are rare survivors of the state's early commercial development, reflecting the frontier economy of the Lone Star State.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Zinc variety of the Bornefeld Austin merchant token, distinguished from the bronze striking. Zinc merchant tokens from the 1880s are uncommon, making this a notable metal variety for Texas exonumia collectors.
